La quinte de Dale Grundle (The Sleeping Years)

This album crept up on me. I found myself returning to it more and more, enjoying it as a soundtrack to wherever I was at that time. I really love the production on it – there are lots of very subtle, clever touches that never take away from the songs.

I am slowly working my way through these albums. I have been playing ‘Wetetie Mare’ by Muluquen Mellese on repeat. It’s a great soul track – so joyous – and what a beautiful voice!

I saw them perform at a show in London earlier this year with a 12-piece choir arranged by Hildur Guðnadóttir. It was one of those nights where you feel as if the band and the audience are sharing something really special together. Despite the fact that they had a choir behind them, the show felt really intimate and the band were obviously really affected by the reaction they got.
On record though it feels a little flat. I probably enjoy this more as a momento than a recording.

I dug out my Nuggets box set again recently and have been enjoying the Sonics, The Remains, etc.
I forgot how much I love this song. The Catchers’ tour manager introduced me to a lot of 60′s Garage bands when we were on tour. I remember driving around LA and he had just bought a lot of CDs from the Sundazed label. We sat in the back of the car with him playing album after album, saying ‘Listen to this…’

I discovered him through the Alan Lomax records and loved his guitar style. I guess the obvious tracks to check out are Pretty Polly and Tribulations. You can hear a straight line from him to the Handsome Family, Sam Amidon, etc.
